All’incrocio tra la statale 77 Val di Chienti e la Flaminia nasce la stradina che si inerpica sulla collina ornata di querce e di olivi. I mesi più caldi dell’anno sono quelli di luglio e agosto con temperature da 19 a 23 gradi circa, mentre i più freddi sono quelli di dicembre e gennaio con temperature che vanno da 2,5 a 5,5 gradi circa. Le parti olivate indicano le zone più miti, essendo a suo tempo state scelte, al momento dell’impianto degli ulivi risalente a mille anni fa circa, per le condizioni climatiche particolarmente favorevoli.

Le precipitazioni nevose non sono abbondanti. Il mese di gennaio è quello che è più interessato dal fenomeno. La neve rimane al suolo nelle parti più esposte al sole al massimo cinque / sei giorni dopo le precipitazioni. Sul Monte Serrone sono ancora evidenti le cavità nelle quali la neve veniva ammassata e poi trasportata all’Ospedale di Foligno, oppure in estate, nelle case dei nobili. Dell’attività resta la conferma nella toponomastica della località “Fossaneve” delle carte IGM e nella denominazione della “strada vicinale dei nevieri” riportata nel Catasto: un vecchio sentiero sterrato che si snoda dalla “fossa della Neve” fino alla strada comunale di Casale. Si notano ancor oggi le cavità a forma di imbuto, con un diametro al massimo di circa dieci metri e un profondità di quattro metri, protette da un tetto a quattro pioventi. I boschi di lecci e querce

Un’immensa lecceta che si estende dall’alta valle per oltre 700 ettari. Alle pendici del Monte Aguzzo e del Monte Cologna vivono diffusi l’orniello, il carpino nero e nella parte soleggiata il corbezzolo, il pino d’Aleppo, la roverella, l’alloro, l’acacia. Attraversando il bosco, lungo sentieri che portano alle zone coltivate si notano le radure create dall’uomo per le calcinari e carbonaie con una fitta vegetazione arbustiva. Sui lembi del bosco nella piana di Casale crescono fluenti le querce che caratterizzano anche il versante sinistro del Fosso Renaro. Nella parte più a monte, a settentrione, si scorge il Monte Canalini (695 m) e il Monte Serrone (1.046 m). A Est svetta il Monte Aguzzo ( 1.074 m), A sud si osserva il Monte Cologna (1.074 m), ad occidente il Colle Serra (447 m) Col Persico (413 m), il Colle dei Cappuccini (322 m). Dalla parte opposta sorgono i colli dei “Montaroni”, toponimo presente nel Catasto Gregoriano. Il calcare massiccio di colore bianco caratterizza quasi interamente i Monti Cologna e il Monte Aguzzo. Su entrambi i versanti della valle emerge la formazione di calcare rosato: dal basso verso l’alto si nota dapprima la scaglia bianca, poi quella rosata e infine la scaglia rossa sulla parte più a monte. Le acque del Sassovivo

Il Fosso Renaro segna il fondo della valle. Nel paesino più a monte, un tempo “Castello di Casale”, un laghetto di cui si ha notizia fin dal XII secolo, di forma circolare con un diametro di circa venti metri ed un profondità massima di sei metri circa, costituiva un riserva idrica di notevole importanza per dissetare gli animali al pascolo. Il laghetto d’inverno gelava. Si costruivano delle cavità a piatto, scavate appositamente allo scopo di raccogliere le acque traboccanti dal laghetto. Si formava così il ghiaccio, si caricava sui muli assestato in balle di iuta per conservarlo e si trasportava a Foligno per usarlo come refrigerante.
Le acque immagazzinate nei rilievi calcarei sgorgano in superficie quando incontrano le formazioni impermeabili. Da questa sorgente nascono le acque del Sassovivo. La sorgente che sgorga dalla valle del Fosso Serrone, nei pressi della Cripta del Beato Alano, è stata di fondamentale importanza per la nascita dell’Abbazia. L’acqua fu infatti canalizzata fino all’abbazia con un minuscolo acquedotto costruito nel 1238. Al momento giusto siano stati raccolti a mano, trasportati in piccole quantità in cesti robusti per non romperne l’integrità, spremuti a freddo, come un tempo e il succo conservato al buio in un luogo fresco.
